For a Korean webtoon to be served in another country, there must be an agreement between the creator or studio and an overseas platform. Webtoon translation is not just swapping words. The original text inside each bubble must be erased and the background filled in before new lettering is placed, and sound effects or signage drawn into the artwork need the same treatment. Bubble sizes are fixed while languages differ in length, so lines sometimes have to be shortened.
Forms of address, politeness levels and jokes that only work locally lose their meaning when translated literally. Substituting a comparable expression or adding explanation are both used, and the choice makes the same work read differently. Preserving the original feel versus reading smoothly is the perpetual fork in translation.
Because official editions go through all that work, they often sit several episodes behind the original. Wanting the latest chapter sooner is exactly why readers look for unofficial translations. Those return nothing to the creator or studio, and they weaken the case for the title launching officially in that market.
Searching the title directly often surfaces unofficial sites first. Checking the original platform's announcements or the creator's official account for where the licensed edition lives is more reliable. Where no official edition exists in your language yet, leaving a request with a platform does sometimes feed into licensing decisions.
